The John Hunter Regatta

On Saturday, March 19, 2016, Georgia Tech Crew raced at the John Hunter Regatta at the Lake Lanier Olympic Rowing Venue. The regatta featured southeast rivals such as Clemson, georgia, and Emory as well as teams from across the country such as Minnesota, SUNY Geneseo, and Trinity College.

Racing began at 9AM with the Varsity 8 heats, where both the men and women rowed their way into the finals later that day. The men fought off challenges from UConn and UCF to win their heat, while the women placed second as they held off a strong Smith crew. The novice men continued the good results with an impressive 21 second win in the 4’s race for the A boat. The B boat finished in fifth place in the second flight. The novice women raced to a first place finish for the B boat in the third flight and a fifth place finish for the A boat in the first flight.

The men’s JV eight posted a solid third place finish behind travelling Minnesota and UConn crews. The men’s varsity 4+ won in their heat over Geneseo and Emory to secure a place in the final later that afternoon. The women’s varsity 4+ followed suit with a strong second place finish, beating third placed georgia to the line and securing their place in the final. The morning was wrapped up by the men’s lightweight 4+, which finished fifth.

After a lunch break, racing resumed at 1:45PM with the men’s varsity 8 final. The men fought hard for a third place finish behind Ithaca and Minnesota. The varsity women’s 8 finished fifth in their heat shortly afterward. The men’s novice 8 placed fifth in the flight while the novice women’s A 8 placed sixth in their flight and the B 8 placed sixth in the subsequent flight.

The JV 4+ races were up next with Tech’s men winning in the second flight and placing sixth in the first flight. Tech’s women raced to a third placed finish behind Trinity A and Clemson. The day was wrapped up by the varsity 4 finals. The men pulled off a strong win over Geneseo and Ithaca while the women finished fifth.

Georgia Tech Crew travels to Panama City Beach on Sunday, March 20 for its annual spring training until Saturday, March 26. The FIRA Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, FL mark the next racing action for the team on Friday, April 1 to Saturday, April 2.
