More Success In Chattanooga!

This past weekend GT Crew traveled to Chattanooga Tennessee to compete at this years Head of the Hooch Regatta. There were minor changes in the course, but with nearly 30 boats entered this year, GT Crew had one of its best years at the Hooch winning 7 medals with all crews racing strong to earn second in team points.

For the second year in a row, Georgia Tech finished second only to Clemson University’s Women in ACC and overall collegiate team points, but the gap was significantly smaller this year. Georgia Tech took home the gold in the Women’s Lightweight 8+, Men’s Lightweight 8+, and Men’s College and Club 8+, silver in the Men’s Championship 8+ and Men’s Lightweight 1x, and bronze in the Women’s Lightweight 4+ and Women’s Novice 8+. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us this beautiful weekend in Chattanooga and congratulations to all the competitors! LETS GO TECH!

GT Closes Out Head Race Season Strong, One More Race this Fall

Georgia Tech Crew had another strong showing at this year’s Head of the South Regatta in Augusta, GA on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Of the 10+ colleges represented there, GT finished second, just behind Jacksonville, a varsity program, by only ten points for the collegiate team point trophy.

Again, Tech saw strong racing from both the men and the women, bringing home 13 medals overall. The women impressed, taking home gold in the Club 8+, Lightweight 8+, and Lightweight 4+, and silver in the Women’s Champ 8+. Them men also took silver in a close race with Jacksonville in the Men’s Champ 8+, in addition to silver medals in the Champ 1x and Lightweight 8+ and a bronze in the Champ 4+.

While this was the last head race of the year for GT, the team has one more race left, a sprint race, to get them pumped up for Spring. Georgia Tech will be hosting a scrimmage against the University of Florida in Roswell, GA on Saturday, November 21. Although Emory backed out of the scrimmage, the teams still anticipate a very exciting race.

UF Scrimmage, Recruits and Parents Visit

This year for the annual Tail of the Beaver Scrimmage, Florida Crew brought two men’s eights and a women’s eight to race GT Crew in Roswell, GA on Saturday, November 21. Each boat competed in three, 1500m sprint pieces. Both schools had good races. GT’s MV8 came out on top with the fastest piece of the day, beating UF’s MV8. GT’s MJV8 beat UF’s V8 and UF’s MN8.

On the women’s side, for the first piece, Tech’s club 8 finished first with half a boat length on UF and Tech’s lightweight 8 not far behind. For the last two pieces UF managed a win on the two Tech boats by a small margin. The “Tail of the Beaver” served as a nice transition from head races to sprints and gave UF and Tech a chance to meet on the water before April.

That wasn’t all that happened this weekend. Ten high school recruits came to visit campus, meet the team and coaches, and race in the scrimmage. This was the second of two recruit weekends this fall. Check back in the Spring for information on our recruit weekends and how you can set up an individual visit with the team.

Additionally, many parents came to visit the boathouse and learn a little more about the team. GT Crew would like to thank all of the parents who came by and all of the parents who have supported us this season. We can’t do it without your help!
